Mebane seeing a housing boom

MEBANE, N.C. — The small town of Mebane may not be so small in the near future.

Over the past decade, city officials say its population has doubled. And now, this week, the city council approved the construction of two new apartment complexes in Mebane. One of those, right off of the highway, will have more than 300 apartments. The other, set to be in the old White Furniture building downtown, is slated to have 157 units.

John Walker, a realtor with Re/Max Diamond Realty in Mebane, says he thinks these developments “will be great for the future.”

He says the Mebane housing market has been booming for the last several years. He credits most of that to people who choose to live in Mebane, but commute to work in the Triad or the Triangle.

“They know if they move somewhere like Mebane, they have easy access to both places,” Walker says. “It’s really a perfect location. They’re looking for that place with that charm factor, and Mebane really provides that.”

“Charm” is a word many locals bring up when speaking of Mebane. In fact, the city recently rolled out its new town slogan: “Mebane: Positively Charming.” As of a few days ago, the phrase is now visible on the city’s water tower. The mayor, Glendel Stephenson, says it’ll also be installed on street signs and on city mailings in the future.

Stephenson added that these two apartment complexes aren’t the only ones on the horizon for Mebane. He says the city council expects to hear several more requests within the next few months.
